Two cats died in a house fire on Linden Terrace Friday afternoon, while all residents escaped without injury, according to the Burlington Fire Department.

Firefighters were dispatched to 46 Linden Terrace at 1:23 PM Sept. 25 for a reported fire in the living room of a one-story, single-family home. Everyone inside the house had evacuated before the first engine arrived, but firefighters were told two cats remained inside.

Crews encountered heavy smoke coming from the front door and called a second alarm. Off-duty Burlington firefighters were called in, while mutual aid from South Burlington, Winooski, Colchester and UVM Rescue helped cover the city.

Firefighters entered the home, attacked the fire and searched for the missing cats. Both animals were found, and firefighters attempted to resuscitate them, but the efforts were unsuccessful.

The fire was brought under control quickly. No residents or firefighters were injured, Fire Chief Michael Curtin said in the department’s media release.

The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation. The department also reminded residents to have working smoke alarms on every level of their homes and outside sleeping areas, test the alarms monthly and replace batteries as needed.
