Burlington police say two gunfire incidents reported during the early morning hours of July 5 were actually part of a single chain of events stemming from a fight on Church Street. The investigation led to the arrest of two additional suspects, bringing the total to three.

According to investigators, around 12:19 AM, Alex Ewanchyna, 21, of Burlington, got into a physical fight with a 17-year-old juvenile near Church and Main streets. Ewanchyna then ran north on Church Street and fired one shot toward the group he had been fighting. No one was hit, and officers quickly arrested him.

The juvenile later got into a vehicle with Terron Gainey-Bervine, 19, of Burlington. As the vehicle traveled through Burlington’s Old North End about eight minutes later, the juvenile accidentally discharged a handgun, striking Gainey-Bervine in the foot.

Police say Gainey-Bervine falsely claimed he had been shot by an unknown person while walking on Center Street. He is now charged with violating court-ordered conditions of release, possessing a firearm, and providing false information to police. He is being held without bail pending an evidentiary hearing.

The juvenile faces charges of simple assault, reckless endangerment, and disorderly conduct in Family Court.

Court records and prior police reporting show this is not Gainey-Bervine’s first encounter with law enforcement. In September 2024, he was arrested in connection with a Burlington marina vandalism investigation and was charged with providing false information to police after officers said he initially gave them inaccurate identifying information.

Ewanchyna has been charged with aggravated assault and reckless endangerment and has since been released on court-ordered conditions. The investigation remains open.
