Burlington Police are investigating an early morning incident involving gunfire that disrupted a large altercation in a downtown parking lot.
Police say that at about 2:18 AM Sunday, September 28, officers were dispatched to the parking lot at the intersection of Main Street and South Winooski Avenue following reports of shots fired. Upon arrival, police determined that a physical fight involving numerous individuals had taken place. During the altercation, a male suspect reportedly fired a handgun into the air, prompting the crowd to scatter.
The suspect is described as a Black male, tall with a heavy build, wearing blue jeans and a white shirt. Officers recovered ballistic evidence at the scene and spoke with several witnesses in the area.
The Burlington Police Department has assigned the case to its Detective Services Bureau for continued investigation.

No injuries have been reported at this time. Police are continuing to review surveillance footage and witness statements as the investigation unfolds.
Downtown sidewalk pedestrian struck by car, in critical condition – A Burlington man has been arrested and charged after his car drove onto a Burlington sidewalk and struck a pedestrian from behind, causing serious injury, Burlington police confirmed Saturday.
The operator of the vehicle, identified as 37-year-old Shaun Littlefield, was taken into custody and charged on suspicion of Grossly Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury. Police say the vehicle involved in the incident has been seized as part of the ongoing investigation.
Littlefield was lodged at the Northwest Correctional Facility on $3,000 bail. He is scheduled to appear before a judge on Monday, September 29, at 10:30 a.m. in connection with the charges.
At 3:47 PM on Friday, September 26, BPD received multiple 911 calls reporting a motor vehicle versus pedestrian collision at the intersection of South Winooski Avenue and Buell Street. Callers reported the pedestrian was lying on the ground and unconscious.
Officers arrived on scene and located both the vehicle operator and the unconscious pedestrian. Burlington Fire Department personnel rendered medical aid, and the pedestrian was transported to the University of Vermont Medical Center Emergency Department. The victim is in critical but stable condition.
