On Monday, September 8, the Burlington City Council is expected to consider a resolution to provide $1,500 from the Councilor Initiative Fund to the BTV Clean Up Crew, a volunteer group committed to cleaning up the city managed by the Peace and Justice Center.
Since May, this volunteer group has met every Thursday morning to clear needles and litter from downtown Burlington streets, as covered by BDN.
The requested funds will cover sharps containers, gloves, trash bags, and coordination materials to keep volunteers equipped for safe cleanups. The initiative focuses on reducing needle stick risks for children, unhoused individuals, downtown workers, and residents, following harm reduction methods endorsed by public health experts.
In 2023, the group removed over 200 “hateful” stickers and raised $5,600. In 2021, they removed over 230 hate stickers and flyers, according to the group.

In an email to supporters, Building Burlington’s Future – a non-profit focused on community issues in the city – noted the crew’s work as a resident-led response to a community need. While the Community Development and Neighborhood Revitalization Committee has made efforts, they believe additional support is necessary for public health and safety.
The Burlington City Council will meet on Monday, with public comment beginning at 6:30 PM.
