On April 28th, around 4:42 p.m., Burlington police received a call about a shooting on Isham Street. When officers arrived, they found a person who had been shot. Quickly rendering aid, the Burlington Fire Department took the victim to the UVM Medical Center for treatment of serious but not life-threatening injuries.
Yesterday, April 29th, authorities identified 23-year-old Nazareth Gonzalez from Winooski as the suspect. That evening, they found and arrested Gonzalez in St. Albans without any issues. He was taken to the Northwest State Correctional Facility, where he was held because he couldn’t pay the $50,000 bail.
A video shared on social media shows Gonzalez stepping out of a car and shooting several times at two people, one being hit. Family members say the victims were riding scooters on a nice day.
Today, a court reviewed the case and found enough evidence to charge Gonzalez with attempted murder and reckless endangerment. Gonzalez has a history of legal troubles, including missing two court dates, four serious crimes, and two minor offenses. He is not allowed to own guns due to his criminal record. The court decided to keep him in jail without bail until a hearing to review the evidence further.
The investigation is still ongoing, and authorities urge anyone with relevant information to reach out to Detective Zach Beal at zbeal@bpdvt.org or (802) 540-2364.
