A late-night fire tore through a multifamily home on Grove Street early Sunday, displacing 15 residents and sending one person to be evaluated for minor injuries, according to the Burlington Fire Department.
Firefighters were dispatched to 32 Grove Street at 1:59 a.m. Sunday for a report of a structure fire. Grove St. is located east of Colchester Avenue, not far from the Winooski Bridge.
Crews arrived within five minutes and found heavy flames pouring from the second floor of a large, four-story wood-frame residence. The incident commander quickly upgraded the call to a second alarm, bringing all on-duty Burlington fire companies — 22 personnel in total — to the scene.
Firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control by 2:27 a.m., though crews remained on site until about 5 a.m. to extinguish hotspots and secure the structure. One occupant suffered minor injuries and was evaluated by EMS at the scene.
The building’s 15 displaced residents are receiving assistance from the property owner and the American Red Cross, officials said.
Throughout the incident, neighboring departments from Colchester, South Burlington, and Winooski provided station coverage to ensure citywide emergency response capability.
The cause of the fire remains undetermined. The Burlington Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating and encourages anyone with questions to contact the office at (802) 864-5577.
The department also reminded residents to practice Escape Drills In The Home (E.D.I.T.H.) and emphasized the critical safety message to never re-enter a burning structure.
