Why is BDN so special?

When we started BDN, our mission was clear: to fill the gaps left by publications like Seven Days, VTDigger, and The Burlington Free Press. While those outlets do vital work, Burlington has lacked a truly dedicated daily press—one that relentlessly covers city hall, school boards, local businesses, and the issues shaping our community.

The absence of consistent, dedicated local news coverage in Burlington has contributed, we believe, to the growing sense of division, frustration, and political burn-out surrounding the city’s issues. Without robust coverage, residents are often left uninformed, partially informed, or reliant on fragmented, incomplete narratives from social media or sporadic reporting.

When school board decisions, city policies, or neighborhood concerns go underreported, residents feel disconnected from the processes that shape their lives.

This void erodes civic engagement, as people become less likely to participate in local elections, attend community meetings, or collaborate on solutions to shared challenges.
