An early morning house fire at 371 College St. displaced tenants but caused no injuries after Burlington firefighters responded swiftly to a smoke report on Thursday, Oct. 2.
At 2:29 a.m., the Burlington Fire Department was dispatched to a residence where smoke was reported inside. Fire crews arrived within four minutes to find heavy smoke conditions and quickly upgraded the call to a structure fire.
Seventeen of the 22 firefighters on duty responded. A coordinated effort led crews to a fire burning in the rear wall of the building. Firefighters contained and extinguished the blaze before it spread further.
All occupants had evacuated safely before crews arrived, thanks to working smoke detectors that alerted residents to the danger. Officials said the early warning also allowed firefighters to respond before the fire grew more severe.
Due to smoke and minor fire damage, tenants are temporarily displaced. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Burlington Fire Marshal’s Office but is not considered suspicious.
“This incident highlights the critical importance of having functioning smoke detectors in every home,” the department said in a statement.
